This is the opinion of experts at the workshop on smart agricultural mechanics for the Mekong Delta, organized by the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City in collaboration with the National University of Ho Chi Minh City, on September 27.<\/p>\n

Tran Anh Son, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, said that climate change, sea level rise and saltwater intrusion have narrowed the area of production land. There is a risk of fundamentally changing the structure of agricultural production and people's lives in the Mekong Delta.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the farming and agricultural production models in the Mekong Delta are still limited and not commensurate with the potential of the region. Typically, the situation of small, spontaneous, unplanned production and poor preservation of agricultural products. Therefore, productivity and product quality are uneven, reducing the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products in the world market.<\/p>\n

Specifically, in rice farming, due to the high cost of imported machinery and equipment, most people accept the use of used plows and tractors, which consume a lot of fuel and operate unstable. Rice harvesting is also difficult due to rudimentary technology. Post-harvest losses of rice remained at 13-14% in quantity and more than 12% in value. Meanwhile, for the fruit industry, outdated processing technology also affects the quality of fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n

The processing lines operate in a synchronous manner, some stages are automated, but there are still many manual operations such as soaking, peeling, sorting and packaging, with low traceability. Similar to the aquaculture industry, the Mekong Delta has a very large farming area, but the level and production equipment are still limited in terms of raising, harvesting, processing and environmental treatment.<\/p>\n

Associate Professor, Dr. Huynh Thanh Dat, Director of the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, said that mechanization in agricultural production is a very important solution to improve productivity, but the mechanical industry Support for agriculture in Vietnam is limited in quantity and quality. Currently, most machinery and equipment for agricultural production have to be imported from abroad because the machinery manufacturing industry in Vietnam still has many shortcomings, few leading enterprises, and a lack of human resources. weak, low capacity, high cost, market organization is not commensurate with the scale of national agriculture.<\/p>\n

Particularly in the Mekong Delta, the promotion of mechanization and application of science and technology in agricultural production still faces many difficulties. The reason is that the value chain of agricultural products has not yet formed, the chain link is not close with distributors, international consumption markets; Production land is still scatteredly distributed, while the process of accumulation and concentration of agricultural land is slow and not synchronous in terms of legal procedures. Along with that, for a long time, the Southwest region is still a "low-lying area" of the country in terms of education, application of science and technology to life.<\/p>\n

The above difficulties, coupled with the incomplete legal framework for technology investment in general and in hi-tech oriented agriculture in particular, has left businesses hesitant to invest in machinery and technology. technology in agricultural production. In addition, the coordination mechanism between localities, regional and sub-regional development links is still limited.<\/p>\n

According to experts, much of Vietnam's agricultural growth so far has relied on expanding production or increasing the use of land and other natural resources, as well as the heavy use of fertilizers and other chemicals. . This has adverse effects on the environment, soil and water resources. Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta has almost no room to expand agricultural production and improve productivity with the current level of science and technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore, in order to meet the sustainable development of agricultural economy for the Mekong Delta, it is necessary to apply scientific and technical advances, the most basic of which is mechanization in the production process, increasing the value of production. products, creating a diversity of product categories and products, making the most of and converting by-products in the production process to help improve the product value chain.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the State should directly support the research and development of new equipment, machines and technologies for agricultural production, reducing administrative procedures in considering research support. At the same time, there is a mechanism to encourage universities and institutes to cooperate with enterprises in the research, manufacture and commercialization of agricultural mechanical products, creating an ecosystem for the mechanical engineering industry to support the development of agriculture. and apply it to people's production practices.<\/p>\n
